What to Wear on Photo Day: Tips for Stylish & Natural Beach Portraits

Updated: Nov 5, 2023

One of the most frequently asked questions I receive from clients prior to our photo session together is, “What should we wear on photo day?” While there are no hard fast rules when it comes to wardrobe, the following guidelines will hopefully help you to look and feel your best on photo day. Bear in mind, these are only suggestions meant to guide and inspire you – not constrain you in any way! The best tip I can offer is to keep your attire simple, and comfortable so that we can focus on capturing the authentic connections you have with one another.

COMPLEMENT: Try to choose clothing options that complement rather than compete with the natural surroundings we’ll be shooting in. A neutral palette of earth tones, soft pastel pinks, creams, and white, as well as muted blues, and greens all photograph well, and blend effortlessly on the beach.

COORDINATE: Try coordinating outfits rather than "matching" them. This can be easily achieved by selecting a single patterned article of clothing for one individual in the group and then pulling solid colors from that pattern to coordinate the others.

FABRIC: Solid colors are preferable to loud, busy prints, plaids, stripes, logos, and graphics that tend to distract from the genuine interactions we want to highlight. Soft, natural fabrics that drape and flow are a wonderful option for ladies, as they lend a sense of movement to the overall portrait.

SHOES: Don’t forget the shoes! For beach sessions I recommend going barefoot since it is more comfortable and better suited to the sandy, wet environment. In other scenarios, please keep your footwear in mind since mismatched or shabby shoes can throw off your entire look.

GLASSES: Please consider removing Transitions Glasses prior to your outdoor session as they will turn dark and hide your eyes.

DETAILS: Kindly remember to remove chipped nail polish, elastic ponytail holders from the wrist, cell phones and sunglasses from pockets, as well as bulky watches that may act as an unnecessary distraction. When in doubt, keep it simple!
