As your Clearwater Beach sunrise photographer, the question I hear most before a session is: "What should we wear?" It's worth asking, because your outfits shape far more than how you each look individually — they shape how the entire image feels. Color and texture set the tone, thoughtfully coordinated (never matchy) palettes create cohesion, and the right choices let your family blend gracefully into the beach backdrop rather than compete with it. And perhaps most importantly, when you feel genuinely comfortable in what you're wearing, that ease translates into every frame.

I cover the fundamentals in my Style Guide, but I wanted to offer something more practical: curated outfit ideas, organized by category, so you're never left standing in front of your closet feeling stuck. Consider this inspiration, not prescription. The aim always remains the same — to look and feel like yourselves, so the genuine connections between you can effortlessly shine through.

The Color Palette That Works Every Time

As I mention in my style guide, a neutral palette photographs beautifully against the beach — soft earth tones, pastel pinks, creams, whites, muted blues and greens. Busy patterns and logos compete with the scenery; soft solids let you be the focus.

A few go-to pieces that fit this palette:

• A flowy linen dress in cream or soft sage. The one pictured below is a great example and a go to favorite.

• A relaxed white or neutral button-down for gentlemen, sleeves rolled, shorts or khaki trousers.

• Soft, breathable basics for the kids — think a simple sage, pink or dusty

  blue romper for girls and khaki shorts for boys.

Fabric & Fit: What Actually Photographs Well

Soft, natural fabrics that move with the breeze — linen, cotton, lightweight knits — give portraits a sense of motion and ease. Stiff or shiny fabrics tend to look flat in photos.

A few fabric notes:

• Linen and cotton blends drape beautifully and breathe well in Florida humidity

• Avoid anything with heavy structure (think: stiff blazers, starched collars) — comfort reads as relaxed in photos

• Maxi dresses and skirts or loose-fitting beach slacks for ladies all move gorgeously in the surf and sand.

  
  

Shoes: My Honest Recommendation

For beach sessions, I always recommend going barefoot — it's more comfortable, and frankly, shoes in sand never look great in photos. But if you're heading straight to breakfast after your session (more on that below), pack a cute pair of sandals to slip on for the road.

The Little Details That Make a Big Difference

A few small things I always mention before a session:

• Remove chipped nail polish ahead of time.

• Take off Transitions glasses (they'll darken outdoors and hide your eyes).

• Avoid bulky watches, large statement jewelry, and anything that competes with your face.
